Global Discourse Series II 2023:
Bridge over Troubled Waters: Navigating the China-US Narrative
HEYA has successfully conducted the second session of its Global Discourse Series 2023. Our guest speakers, Dr. Joe Liaw Siau Chi and Ms. Angeline Tan shared valuable inputs on how you need to know the conflict between China-US. The relationship between the United States and China is complex, as each country sees the other differently, resulting in a lack of coherence in their relationship.
Here are the key takeaways that our speakers shared:
• The US-China relationship is characterized by tension, which is fueled by misperceptions and a lack of understanding between the two nations. • The US-China relationship is based on mutual distrust and self-interest. The US has a dominant narrative that shapes how the world sees its actions, but China feels that the US is unfair in how it expects China to behave.
• We should not think of the US-China relationship as a situation where one side wins and the other loses. Rather, we should treat it as a regular competition between countries and try to get advantages for both sides. It's important to move away from the idea that one side is good and the other is bad, and instead have a more balanced and nuanced view.
• CCP is unlikely to attack Taiwan militarily in recent years because such a move would entail significant domestic and international losses that the CCP cannot afford.
• Xi Jinping is working towards reunifying Taiwan, but it's not likely to happen soon or while he's still in charge. Even if it does happen, it would be at least five to ten years from now .
Thank you to all participants for joining us, and we truly value and appreciate our speakers' sharing!
